Advanced 3D Closed Captioning and Titling is a reality with EEG continuing to lead the way.

The DE280-3D supports titling functions in three different 3D formats.

Left-Right (or Side-by-Side) -- one video signal carries two images which appear in a horizontal split screen on a standard monitor, one carrying left-eye data and the other one carrying right-eye data
Top/Bottom -- the two images are in a vertically split screen
Dual Video -- two separate video signals run on two separate cables carrying the stereo image, combined into a 3D image on a compatible 3D monitor

With the DE280-3D, myriad applications are possible. The ability to write subtitles (open captions) on to 3D content will be demonstrated, as well as full capabilities for end-to-end 3D closed captioning authoring, encoding, and on-screen decoding.

Industry update:

January 3, 2011

In mainstream video forums across the Web, consumers are asking about the lack of closed captioning for 3D programming, and when they can expect to see it.

At this time, there is no standardized way for TV providers to encode 3D closed captions that can be read by a TV or set-top box (STB). Currently a CEA committee is working on this problem, with the objective of adding 3D support to the CEA-608 and CEA-708 standards that govern required closed captioning. EEG participates actively in this committee alongside members of the broadcasting and consumer electronics industries.

Until standardized consumer decoders are available for 3D closed captioning, the most viable solution for broadcasters to provide accessibility to the millions of Americans who rely on captioning is to provide open-captioned versions of 3D programming in simulcast with the uncaptioned program, delivered on an adjacent channel.

EEG's DE280-3D is an on-screen overlay decoder that can create 3D open captions from a CEA-608/708 closed captioned source. The DE280-3D features easily configurable z-plane offset, and is compatible with a variety of production 3D video formats. This is the solution we recommend to TV providers for 3D video accessibility until a full closed captioning standard is available.
